Bay Window Curtains: Traditional Style You’ll Love
Bay windows just beg to be extravagantly dressed. Even very small, square bays become something special when hung with beautifully fitting bay window curtains. But especially for really wide sweeping bays, whether they’re perfectly curved or angled, not giving them curtains that are the equal of ball gowns seems almost criminal.
Bay window curtains are the costume party dressings of the window world and you can really unleash your creativity and have a ball choosing fabrics and trimmings. They can be made to look ethereal and dreamy or bold and spectacular depending on your mood and the setting.
Dramatically dressed with swags and swirls, tie backs and tassels, bay window curtains add luxury and a rich almost-boudoir feel to a traditionally furnished room. In velvets, brocades, damasks or silks, really large, curved bay windows give a room a hushed, tranquil sense of sanctuary in the way they embrace the living area. Even small square windows dressed in softly draped bay window curtains give a room depth and a sense of importance.
At first glance the thought of hanging bay window curtains can be a little daunting, and some bays do seem to have been constructed with the express purpose of presenting a curtain challenge to the owner. In fact, bay window curtains are no more complicated than ordinary curtains for straight windows. The difficulty lies in the accurate measuring and the sourcing of either rods, poles or brackets on which to suspend them.
All is not lost however, as it is possible to buy poles with flexible sections that can be bent to fit almost any shape of window. By using passing rings to pass over the brackets instead of standard closed rings on the pole, the bay window curtains will run freely around the inside of the window.
The other problem you may come up against with bay window curtains is the lack of standard sizes. If you try to fit readymade curtains that were intended for straight windows you’re unlikely to get the right width of fabric, but if you remember that you need roughly twice the width in fabric as the window measures there is nothing to stop you buying a couple of pairs of standard curtains to make up the extra width needed in bay window curtains.
With a little imagination and ingenuity there’s always a way.
Valances or swags add the finishing touches to bay window curtains and lend an air of opulence. They hide the mechanics of the runners or poles and may be fitted either on their own poles for simple valances, or pinned to hardboard fascias for a more extravagantly draped and folded swag.
