Daybed Bedspreads: Why Settle for Old-Fashioned?

Daybed bedspreads have come of age! With a fashionable and bold parade of colors and patterns kaleidoscoping through the stores the range runs from sophisticated elegance right through the dizzily feminine and on into muted masculinity.

Gone are the days when the only daybed bedspreads to be had were homemade hand-me-downs created by your grandmother, or made-over general bedspreads that puckered and wrinkled as soon as you sat on them. You can confidently tuck the heirlooms somewhere safe and give your daybed a makeover.

Most daybed bedspreads come as part of a set and should included everything needed for a whole new look. It may be tempting to get carried away, but a little caution is advised. Daybeds are not especially small pieces of furniture and unless you want to dominate the room the trick is to make sure the bedspreads you choose blend perfectly with existing furniture.

Daybeds don’t have to look like frothy Hollywood concoctions. In the den, daybed bedspreads lean towards the look of the couch, inviting you to while away an hour or two with the gaming console or the TV big match. The perfect place to sprawl and chill, with dusky colors and harmonizing stripes or bold blocky repeating patterns with an art deco flavor. Native American patterned bedspreads go well here too if your existing theme will complement it.

If your daybed lives in one of the more well-trafficked areas of the house, like the living room for instance, you may wish to opt for a more formal set of daybed bedspreads, adding sturdy pillows that double as cushions for comfortable seating and a tailored bedspread that stays put.

The amount of use your daybed gets will more or less dictate the type of coverings you choose.

Overly fancy and frilly daybed bedspreads, gorgeous though they are, might not be practical if you’re coping with sticky little fingers or muddy little paws. In an ideal world, daybed bedspreads will reflect your personality in the way most other furnishings do. In the real world there are compromises to be made and we don’t always get what we’d most like.

But ‘compromise’ is the key word here. Even if you long to dress your daybed in Barbie pink but know it won’t stand up to the kids bouncing on it, you can add a pink accent cushion or two to your otherwise sensible daybed bedspread collection.

Thankfully, daybed bedspreads are mostly machine washable, allowing for a little wiggle room in the ‘practical vs. desirable’ debate.

If you’re lucky enough to be able to indulge your fancies with no concern for basic practicalities, the daybed is the perfect piece of furniture to do it with. Self-contained and a little mysterious (after all it hides a secret, even if we know what that secret is), given the right daybed bedspreads they can tell any story you ask them to tell.
